Second wine refers to a wine produced by a top château from grapes not selected for the main (first) wine. Second wines use similar production techniques but from younger vines, less-ripened parcels, or released bottlings. Second wines represent good value, offering estate-quality wine at lower prices than first wines. For collectors, second wines offer reduced investment risk compared to the first wine while maintaining some of the estate's character. Most top Bordeaux and Burgundy producers make second wines.
