Bordeaux

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

202220202019201620152010

Bordeaux's top reds age 15–30 years in great vintages. The 2010, 2016, and 2020 are the trifecta of the decade — structured, complex, and built to last. The 2022 may ultimately rival them.

Burgundy's finest reds reach peak complexity at 10–20 years. The 2010, 2015, 2019, 2020, and 2022 are all exceptional; the 2021 is a small but strikingly pure vintage that collectors are quietly hoarding.

Barolo is the 'Wine of Kings' — Nebbiolo demands at least a decade before it fully opens. The 2010 and 2016 are the generational benchmarks; the 2019, 2021, and 2022 are all building toward greatness.

Gran Reserva Riojas can cellar 20–30 years in top vintages. The 2019 is widely considered the decade's finest; 2010, 2016, and 2017 are excellent and already drinking beautifully at Reserva level.

Napa Cabernet is built for 15–25 years in exceptional vintages. The 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2021 stand out as the benchmark years of the decade. Avoid the 2017 and 2020 at the top end due to wildfire smoke.

Vintage quality — questions answered

Why does vintage matter for fine wine?

Climate during the growing season — temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours — directly shapes a wine's concentration, balance, and aging potential. A great vintage produces grapes with ideal sugar-acid balance and deep flavour, resulting in wines that reward long cellaring. A poor vintage can mean dilute fruit, low acidity, or rot, producing wines best drunk young.

How long should I cellar a wine from a great vintage?

It depends on the region and producer tier. Classified Bordeaux and Barolo from exceptional years (2010, 2016, 2019) typically peak at 15–25 years. Top Burgundy reds peak at 10–20 years. Napa Cabernet and Northern Rhône Syrah from great vintages (2013–2015, 2021) peak at 15–25 years. Entry-level wines from the same vintages often peak at 5–10 years.

Is a Challenging vintage worth buying at all?

Often yes, at the right price. Producers in challenging years (like 2013 Bordeaux or 2014 Barolo) often made careful selections and produced concentrated, honest wines at a fraction of the price. The key is to buy from top estates and expect to drink earlier rather than cellar for decades.

What's the difference between an Exceptional and Outstanding vintage?

Exceptional vintages are the generational all-timers — 2010 and 2016 Bordeaux, 2010 Barolo, 2019 Rioja — that produce wines capable of 30+ years of development and near-perfect critical scores. Outstanding vintages are excellent across the board, produce wines that reward 10–20 years of cellaring, and are great buying opportunities.

How do I know if my specific bottle is ready to drink now?

General vintage quality is just the starting point. Whether your particular bottle is ready depends on the specific producer, the wine's style, how it has been stored, and your personal preference for primary fruit versus tertiary complexity. Use our free drinking-window checker to get a personalised readiness assessment for any wine in your cellar.
