Central Otago, in the mountainous heart of New Zealand's South Island, is the world's southernmost wine region and a star for Pinot Noir. Its continental climate — hot days, cold nights, intense sunlight — yields vivid, fruit-forward yet structured Pinot Noir of dark cherry, plum, wild thyme and spice, with bright acidity and fine tannin. Dramatic alpine scenery and schist soils give wines of both power and elegance.

Structure

BodyUnusually for New Zealand, Central Otago has a dry continental climate rather than maritime, with a big diurnal swing that builds colour and structure while preserving acidity. Sub-regions like Bannockburn, Bendigo and Gibbston give distinct expressions, from riper and richer to more floral and elegant. Riesling and Pinot Gris also thrive.
