The vast Columbia Valley, spanning much of eastern Washington State, is the powerhouse of the Pacific Northwest's wine. Its high desert climate — hot, sunny days and cold nights, with irrigation from the Columbia River — yields ripe yet structured Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Riesling. The reds are rich and balanced, combining New-World fruit with firm structure and freshness, across sub-AVAs like Walla Walla, Red Mountain and Yakima Valley.

Structure

BodyFar inland and arid, the Columbia Valley relies on irrigation and benefits from a big diurnal swing that preserves acidity. Bordeaux varieties and Syrah excel, with Red Mountain giving especially powerful, tannic Cabernet and Walla Walla refined reds. Washington's signature is balance — ripeness with structure.
