Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, is the country's leading region for Bordeaux-style reds and Syrah. Warmer than the South Island, it ripens Cabernet, Merlot and especially Syrah, with the famous Gimblett Gravels sub-region giving structured, elegant reds of cassis, plum, black pepper and herbs. Hawke's Bay also makes excellent Chardonnay, blending New-World ripeness with cool-climate freshness and refinement.

Structure

BodyNew Zealand's second-largest region, Hawke's Bay owes its reputation to the free-draining, heat-retaining Gimblett Gravels, ideal for ripening Bordeaux varieties and Syrah. Its Syrah is peppery and medium-bodied, more Northern Rhône than Australian; its Chardonnay is among the country's finest. The reds are elegant and structured rather than blockbuster.
