Stellenbosch, in the heart of South Africa's Cape Winelands, is the country's most prestigious red-wine region. Its mountain slopes, varied soils and Mediterranean climate, cooled by False Bay breezes, excel with Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux blends and Syrah, giving structured, elegant reds of cassis, plum, tobacco and a savoury, mineral edge. Stellenbosch also makes serious Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay, anchoring the Cape's fine-wine reputation.
