Vinho Verde, in Portugal's cool, rainy northwest, makes light, fresh, often slightly fizzy white wine ('green wine', meaning young rather than coloured). Low in alcohol and high in zesty acidity, it offers green apple, citrus, white flowers and a saline lift, with a characteristic gentle spritz. The serious end, single-varietal Alvarinho and Loureiro from sub-regions like Monção e Melgaço, shows real depth and ageability.
