Chenin Blanc is one of the most versatile white grapes, swinging from bone-dry to sweet to sparkling, always underpinned by vibrant acidity. Its Loire homeland (Vouvray, Savennières) makes mineral, honeyed, age-worthy wines; South Africa, where it is the most-planted grape, ranges from crisp everyday whites to serious old-vine bottlings. Quince, apple, chamomile and wet wool define it, with honey and ginger appearing with age.

Structure

BodyHigh natural acidity and susceptibility to botrytis make Chenin ideal across the sweetness spectrum. Dry Savennières is taut and mineral; off-dry Vouvray balances richness and acid; noble-rot Coteaux du Layon is lusciously sweet. South African old-vine Chenin is a value benchmark.
