Montepulciano (the grape, not the Tuscan town) is central-eastern Italy's generous red, most famous as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Deeply coloured and smooth, it offers ripe black cherry, plum, dried herbs and a savoury, rustic warmth, with soft tannins and moderate acidity. Great value at the everyday level, it reaches real depth in top Abruzzo and Marche bottlings.

Structure

BodyLate-ripening and thick-skinned, it gives inky, fruit-forward wines. Quality ranges widely — much is simple and juicy, but producers like Valentini and the Colline Teramane DOCG show its serious, age-worthy side.
