Roussanne is the aromatic, finer-boned partner to Marsanne in the Northern Rhône. It brings florals, herbal tea, pear and a honeyed, nutty character with bright acidity that lifts the heavier Marsanne in blends. Capable of remarkable ageing, it develops complex notes of beeswax, quince and dried herbs. Fickle to grow but prized, it also appears in Châteauneuf-du-Pape's whites and California Rhône blends.

Structure

BodyNamed for the russet hue of its ripe berries, Roussanne is prone to oxidation, mildew and uneven ripening, which long limited its plantings. Its higher acidity and perfume make it the more characterful half of the classic Rhône white duo, and it can age into honeyed, mineral complexity.
