Tannat is one of the most tannic grapes on earth — the muscular signature red of Madiran in southwest France and the national grape of Uruguay. Inky and full-bodied, it delivers blackberry, plum, licorice and smoke behind a wall of firm tannin. Modern winemaking (micro-oxygenation, oak) tames its grip; Uruguay's maritime climate yields a softer, fruitier style.

Tannat — questions answered

Is Tannat really the most tannic grape?

It is among the very highest — its name even derives from its tannin. Madiran traditionally needed years to soften.

Why is Tannat considered healthy?

It is exceptionally rich in procyanidins, antioxidants linked to cardiovascular benefits — researchers have cited it in 'French paradox' studies.

How does Uruguayan Tannat differ from Madiran?

Uruguay's maritime climate yields rounder, fruitier, more approachable Tannat; Madiran is firmer and more structured.

What food pairs with Tannat?

Fatty grilled red meat and barbecue — the protein and fat are essential to soften its powerful tannin.
