Trebbiano (Ugni Blanc in France) is one of the world's most-planted white grapes — high-yielding, high-acid and often neutral. It underpins oceans of everyday Italian white and, distilled, the great brandies of Cognac and Armagnac. Yet from lower yields in Abruzzo (as Trebbiano d'Abruzzo) it can make surprisingly textured, mineral, ageworthy whites of lemon, green apple and almond.
Structure
| Body | Prized historically for productivity and acidity rather than flavour, most Trebbiano is simple and crisp. But a handful of Abruzzo producers, notably Valentini, prove the grape can reach real heights with old vines and low yields. Its high acidity makes it ideal base wine for distillation. |

Trebbiano — questions answered
Why is Trebbiano used to make brandy?
Its high acidity and neutral flavour make ideal base wine for distilling Cognac and Armagnac, where the spirit's character comes from ageing.
Is Trebbiano always neutral?
Mostly, due to high yields — but low-yield Trebbiano d'Abruzzo can be textured, mineral and surprisingly age-worthy.
Is Ugni Blanc the same grape?
Yes — Ugni Blanc is the French name for Trebbiano, the workhorse of southwest French brandy production.
What food pairs with Trebbiano?
Light seafood, fried appetizers and simple poultry — a crisp, easygoing table white.
