Concentration describes the intensity and density of a wine's flavour, color and structure, as opposed to a dilute or watery character. It comes from low yields, old vines, small berries, ripe fruit and careful winemaking (including techniques like saignée). Concentrated wines feel packed and persistent on the palate. Concentration aids aging but, taken to extremes, can overwhelm balance and finesse.

Concentration is a quality marker when matched by acidity and freshness; without them it tastes heavy and jammy. The best wines balance concentration with elegance — power without weight.
