Provenance is the documented history of a wine's ownership and storage. It answers: Where has the bottle been? How has it been stored? Has it been exposed to heat or light? Bottles with excellent provenance (from a reputable collector or estate cellar with consistent temperature) command premium prices; bottles with unknown provenance are risky purchases. Poor provenance—wine stored in warm conditions, subjected to heat cycling, or with unknown history—significantly increases oxidation and spoilage risk. When buying aged wine, especially at auction, provenance is as important as the wine itself.

Provenance is critical for expensive bottles. A wine with poor provenance may look fine but be oxidized. Reputable sellers provide detailed provenance; unknown origins warrant caution and price reduction.

Tasting cues
  • Provenance is the ownership and storage history — it predicts condition more than any tasting note.
  • Poor storage can mute fruit, advance browning, or create cooked aromas even in a great vintage.
  • Ideal history: continuous cool dark storage, few moves, documented purchase chain.
Examples
  • Original wooden case from a reputable merchant vs mixed unknown cellar stock.
  • Restaurant wine-list bottles may have been stored upright under lights — higher risk.
  • Producer library releases often carry the strongest storage story.
Cellar actions
  • Keep invoices, delivery photos, and cellar logs — they become part of resale value.
  • Prefer known supply chains for expensive mature bottles over anonymous bargain finds.
