Storage is how wine is kept after bottling, and it is decisive for both immediate condition and long-term aging. Ideal conditions are cool (around 12–14°C), stable temperature, darkness, moderate humidity, stillness and bottles on their sides to keep corks moist. Heat, temperature swings, vibration, light and dryness all damage wine, sometimes irreversibly. Good storage preserves a wine's trajectory; poor storage destroys value.
WHY IT MATTERS FOR COLLECTORS
Storage is the single biggest factor a collector controls. Provenance — proof of good storage — drives auction value, and a great wine kept warm is worthless. A proper cellar or temperature-controlled unit is essential for aging.
