Solera (Spanish for "on the ground floor") is an aging and blending system, particularly used in Spanish sherry and brandy production. The solera consists of multiple barrel tiers (scales) stacked vertically. Wine is drawn from the bottom tier (solera proper), and replaced by wine from the tier above, which is replaced by wine from above it, and so on. This fractional blending ensures consistency and complexity, allowing wines to age while remaining in productive use. The solera system is ancient and iconic to Spanish wine production.

Solera-aged wines show remarkable consistency and complexity due to the blending system. Understanding solera helps appreciate sherry and other fortified wines' character.
